Restoring the Seat Belt Chime on 1978-79 Lincolns
(Figure B: Chime Unit and Tomboli Mechanism)
The next portion explains how to troubleshoot and repair the optional seat belt chime in the 1978-79 Lincoln models, especially the Diamond Jubilee editions. The seat belt chime works like an old-fashioned doorbell, operated by a “tomboli” hitting a tone bar. Over time, rust and moisture can freeze the tomboli in place.
Steps for restoration include:
Accessing the unit behind the glove box.
Removing the glued lid carefully.
Sanding and freeing the tomboli (see Figure B).
Replacing the felt damper and addressing ground issues at the seatbelt retractor.
Eliminating Rattles in the Mark V
(Figure C: Emissions Charcoal Canister Location)
Even with excellent build quality, the 1977–1979 Continental Mark V is not immune to annoying rattles. This section focuses on diagnosing and fixing three of the most common noises that develop over time.
The first issue addressed is the charcoal emissions canister located on the firewall beneath the antenna (Figure C). The article explains how to secure or adjust this component to reduce post-pothole rattling. Other rattles are also explored in this section (though not included in your full message yet), promising quick fixes that help preserve the car’s quiet, luxury ride.
